Legumes or pulses are not just amazing for us but also for the planet, they are water wise, adapt to changing climates, put nitrogen back in the soil, as well as biodiversity into the garden AND, they are packed with protein too, they have more Calcium than in milk and more mineral and vitamins than a piece of steak or chicken.
Just 1kg of beef needs 15 000 litres of water to grow. With the same amount of water WE CAN GROW 400kg of BEANS!!
That can feed a lot more people a lot more healthly and for a lots longer than 1 kg of beef!
We learned to ID 13 different types and we even tasted Hummus which is made from chickpeas and eaten in many part of the middle east.- this was a new taste to many of us.
We will now run a bean race between a Soya bean and Sugar bean and document their growth speeds as a simple scientific experiment.
..and very appropriately "bonseesh was on the school menu today" this gave us a new appreciation for the understated bean!
